Is This You?
Many Husbands Refuse to Discuss Long Term Care
By Barbara Haselden, President
Hometown Insurors, Inc.

Long ago, I identified a phenomenon when it comes to long term care; most men don't like to talk about it. After 10 years as a long term care insurance agent, I speak to many wives who contact our office to request information about long term care insurance, only to discover later that once received their husband would not discuss it.
I often joke that no matter what age, many men think they are 10 feet tall and bulletproof!

That is why, on some issues, wives simply must grab the rudder and sail smoothly through these rough waters! Most men think they will never need to be cared for by another human being. They can't imagine that this could ever happen to them. (I say it is the same dynamics that explain why many men will not ask for directions when lost!) They think it's a sign of weakness! I encounter frustrated wives all the time who are worried about how they and their husbands will be cared for in the future, because, after all, she cared for their parents. But he won't sit down and discuss it.

Most seniors on Medicaid Welfare in nursing homes today are there because they didn't plan ahead. They were just like you and me, middle class people that got caught in a long term healthcare crisis they couldn't afford. Because they ran out of money, they ran out of options. Welfare will not pay for home care, so they lost that option. And with only 700 Florida Medicaid waivers for Assisted Living Facilities, they lost that option also. They were forced into a nursing home. It happens ALL THE TIME. Were they poor to begin with? No. Does it impact the life of the healthy spouse? You better believe it!

So, if your husband thinks long term care is about as likely to happen to either of you as being abducted by aliens, tell him how important you think it is to at least get the facts before a final decision is made. Then call us.

We offer a free, educational consultation, including quotes from several carriers.

By planning ahead you can avoid becoming a burden to your kids, eliminate the risks of leaving you or your spouse in a bad financial situation should one of you need care in the future, and ensure affordability of quality service, including care in your own home. What more could you ask?

Have You Promised Your Parents You Will Take Care of Them?
By Barbara Haselden, President

It usually starts with errands. Stopping by the drug store or picking up some groceries for mom (dad, or both). What begins as an occasional loving gesture becomes increasingly necessary and more frequent. Then you learn some checks have bounced at their bank, and after locating the statements you find the envelopes have not
even been opened for the last six months. Important bills are late. You gather them up and pay them.

Their house is a little dirty. You find yourself washing up a few dirty dishes each time you visit, and the tub and toilet really need to be scrubbed, but you hate to say anything. Are they bathing regularly? You are worried…what's next?

You call your sister (brother) to share you concerns. They want to help but live in California (Texas, Rhode Island, Egypt, etc.) They are full of helpful advice but little day-to-day assistance. You're on your own.

You have a great paying job that you need in order to take care of your own family and fund your retirement plans, which are really just around the corner. You can't quit your job. And spare time, forget it, you don't have time to do all the things you need to do for yourself. Mom and/or dad are going to need full-time supervision and personal care soon. You begin to realize that this could go on for years and that it is a seven day a week responsibility.

This is the beginning of Long Term Care. It often arrives without fanfare, creeping slowly in the back door. By the time you realize it is happening, it's too late to get insurance that would pay for the day-to-day care most often needed to keep loved ones in their home, such as assistance with housekeeping, errands, grocery shopping, meal preparation…help with bathing and dressing. Think about it.

I have been in the Long Term Care Insurance business for over 10 years. Many times people do not obtain LTC insurance because their children have told them not to worry about it, that they would take care of them if anything happened. When it actually occurs, many adult children find they had no idea of the magnitude of the problem. Caregiving is a full time job.

Call us for information on Long Term Care Insurance. Long Term Care Insurance pays for home care, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Many people are able to remain home longer if they have insurance to rely on instead of just family caregivers. Oftentimes, by combining some hired help at home along with family members, an impossible situation can be managed. LTC insurance must be obtained while people are reasonably healthy. Don't delay this important family issue until you suspect there is a problem.
